For every free hearing test taken with the Campaign for Better Hearing’s sponsors, $4.00 is donated to provide hearing aids to those who need them, but cannot afford them. Thanks to the campaign for Better Hearing’s Give-back Program, and Hearing Professional Ponmaly Sourivong from Hear After in Toronto, Jordan Wallace is now part of a growing number of Canadians who were awarded a brand-new pair of hearing aids:

“Being a recipient of this award is a blessing for me. Especially with the birth of my son, I am hopeful that I will be able to hear and communicate better with him in his toddler years as he begins to talk.

“By having hearing loss at a younger age, you are missing out on sounds with an entire life in front of you. For me, I lost my hearing through meningitis when I was two, with no hearing in my right ear.

“My mother put me through speech therapy during my early preschool years so I could learn to speak again. I had the assistance of an FM device from my grade school years until grade ten before choosing to rely on my hearing aid for the remainder of my school years. Though there are alternatives such as sign language and cochlear implants, (which was not an option for my type of hearing loss,) having a hearing loss, especially at a young age, can be devastating.

“For those sitting on the fence about addressing their hearing loss, I’d say to get your hearing tested so that you don’t miss out on speech and sounds. Treating your hearing loss will make your life a lot easier. And do not worry about what other people may think of you. What matters is you being able to hear properly.”
