For Jose Da Rosa, being able to hear isn’t just about helping himself; it’s also about helping others.

“My wife and I have a lot of appointments,” says Jose, “and because she does not speak English and also has a bad hearing loss, it is my responsibility to translate for her. I can’t translate properly if I can’t hear.”

Jose’s hearing professional, Tonyshia Janssen from ListenUP! Canada in Toronto, nominated Jose for the Campaign for Better Hearing’s Give-Back program. The program awards hearing aids to those who need them, but can’t afford them.

“Hearing loss influences every aspect of life,” Jose says. “You can’t understand other people; you can’t understand the television. Without the closed captions, you can’t watch a movie. There are some movies I really want to watch but can’t because I can’t hear.”

Now, with Jose’s new hearing aids, his quality of life will improve as a whole because he will now be able to hear well. For those who are unsure about getting their hearing tested, Jose has some important advice.

“Try it. The longer you wait to get your hearing tested, the more you will become less and less involved in your life.”
