“Not being able to hear well largely hindered my ability to effectively communicate with people. Before now, I would constantly struggle with oral communication; this made me miss lots of opportunities and this also made me tense and not confident. Now I feel like one big barrier in my life has been removed, which is going to allow me to develop myself further with less awkward and unpleasant experiences.”

These are the words of Talles Texeira Santos, currently a student of Massage Therapy. He was nominated for the National Campaign for Better Hearing’s Give-back program by Hearing Professional Tami Tran. The program awards hearing aids to those who need them, but can’t afford them. For every hearing test taken with the campaign’s sponsors, $4.00 is donated towards the purchase of hearing aids which are then gifted to Canadian like Talles.

Talles has had hearing loss since he was a child, but never had the chance to treat it and in the last few years, it has gotten worse. He struggled in school, in his training and in his personal life.

“I felt very bad and frustrated that everybody was able to hear something, and I could not,” says Talles. “I frequently avoided talking to people in order to not feel rejected and less worthy.”

But his new hearing aids will make all the difference:

“I feel like a chain attached to a heavy weight has been removed,” says Talles. “Now I’m free to reach my full potential.”
