As someone with hearing loss, Charles Hayter knows all too well how isolating the condition can be.

“Having hearing loss is a large handicap. It’s devastating,” Charles says. “I’ve avoided social interactions because I couldn’t figure out what people were saying to me. I was always on high alert and I couldn’t make friends.”

After meeting with Charles and hearing his story, Hearing Instrument Specialist Rita Huynh at ListenUP! Canada in Scarborough, Ontario nominated him for the Campaign for Better Hearing’s Give-back Program. This program awards hearing aids to those with hearing loss, but can’t afford to purchase the hearing aids they need to improve their quality of life.

For Charles, the greatest improvement in his life happened the weekend after receiving his hearing aids.

“My improved hearing is going to save my relationship with my long-standing lady friend since 1973,” Charles confesses. “She had grown exasperated with my declining hearing over the past year and I believe she might have ended our relationship if I had not been awarded with these hearing aids. Thank you.”
